About the West
Ireland’s West region covers Galway, Mayo and Roscommon, stretching from the vibrant city of Galway along the Wild Atlantic Way to the mountains and coastline of Mayo. It’s home to Galway University Hospital, Mayo University Hospital, Portiuncula University Hospital and Roscommon University Hospital, alongside a number of smaller acute and community hospitals.
The region’s main third-level institution is the University of Galway, which includes the School of Medicine.
Under the HSE’s health regions structure, the West falls within HSE West and North West, which also covers Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim and Roscommon.
