The hospital is a 70-bed hospital and offers a range of general and specialist inpatient and outpatient services including emergency, general medicine and surgery, basic orthopaedic, clinical investigation, obstetrics, maternity, gynaecology, high dependency and coronary care, palliative care, medical imaging, pathology and paediatrics. Additional services include Mental Health, Alcohol and other Drugs Service, oral health, physiotherapy, dietetics, speech pathology and outreach/community-based facilities, as well as a Primary Health Care Centre. Another private hospital is adjacent to the facility and operates within a co-location agreement.
The hospital has approximately 282 full time equivalent staff delivering services across acute, community and primary care. Approximately 500 babies are born at the Gladstone Hospital each year and approximately 1600 surgical cases performed in the two operating theatres. There is a 29-bed mixed GeneralSurgical and Medical Ward and a four-bed High Dependency Unit where patients may be held pending retrieval, or for close observation not possible on the wards. Additional beds are available for paediatrics. The hospital has a busy surgical outpatient clinic reviewing a wide variety of surgical conditions.
Paediatrics Department has a 9 bed General Paediatric Ward, and a 4 cot Nursery. It is the hub centre for the Banana Shire accepting referrals in consultation with the Paediatrician and Qnets of children and neonates who can be managed within the resources available.
In addition to a Paediatric outpatient service that reviews a wide variety of paediatric conditions, the department provides specialist paediatric services including Community Paediatrics, Child Protection, Diabetes, Indigenous Health and Child Development.
Consultants are supported clinically in both the ward and clinics by Registrar and RMO cover. Administrative support for the ward and the Department is also provided.
The hospital has a busy Paediatric outpatient’s department reviewing a wide variety of paediatric conditions, and includes a diabetic clinic. 30% of all CAT 1 patients presenting to the ED are Paediatric.
The Nursery has C.P.A.P. and ventilator capabilities, undertaking short term respiratory support for newborns, or stabilisation before transfer to a Tertiary facility for ongoing management. Infants born less than 34 weeks gestation are transferred in-utero if possible, in consultation with the Obstetric team.
Role Info
• Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in accordance with the Queensland Public Service and CQ Health values.
• Actively participate in the Performance Appraisal and Development (PAD) process and engage in continuous learning and workplace improvement and innovation
• Understand your broad responsibility for safety and quality in healthcare, actively participate in continuous quality and safety improvement activities within the workplace and notify a relevant clinical or non-clinical responsible officer when concerns exist about workplace or patient safety.
• Carry out work in accordance with prescribed practices and procedures, in a manner to avoid or minimise workplace and patient risks for yourself, patients, employees, volunteers, visitors to the facility.
• Support the provision of a high-quality Paediatric Medicine service under the direction and guidance of the Director, Staff Specialists and other Senior Medical Staff.
• In consultation with/under the supervision of the senior medical staff within the Department:
o Initiate maintain and be responsible for the clinical care of patients.
o Manage patients to ensure that problems are fully assessed and identified.
o Plan all clinical care, including discharge requirements.
o Supervise and arrange appropriate clinical investigations.
o Maintain appropriate comprehensive and concise documentation of all observations, opinions, diagnoses other data and procedures undertaken.
